In 2016, CO2 Solutions entered this prestigious international competition focused on innovative technologies to convert carbon dioxide emissions into useful products like construction materials, alternate fuels and other current consumer goods. The contest offers US$20 million in prize money.
The NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE was divided into two parts and three rounds, two of which have been completed. 38 companies entered the competition. Round one was an evaluation of the viability of the proposed technology from a commercial and technical standpoint, a round that CO2 Solutions made through, being selected as one of the semi-finalists for the second round, which was a pilot competition. Given their singular carbon-capture technology, CO2 Solutions was also authorized to partner with other contenders offering a CO2 reuse process only. These newly formed combined entries proposed the CO2 Solutions capture process with the reuse process of the partner company.
In February 2018, the XPRIZE organizers announced the ten finalists selected for the third and final round, a demonstration phase that will last from June 2018 to February 2020. The winners of the two parts of the competition will be announced in March 2020, each taking home a prize of US$7.5 million. Two CO2 Solutions partnerships were retained among the finalists in the final round. Needless to say, the CO2 Solutions team is extremely proud of this accomplishment, which so eloquently underlines the tremendous efficiency and elegance of their carbon-capture technology.
CO2 Solutions knows why their solo entry was not retained – their reuse applications were not as sufficiently advanced as the other competitors, among them the two partners with whom they will continue into the finale. The company nonetheless has unequivocally distinguished itself with its revolutionary carbon-capture process that they have been so invested in over the years.
